Now Offering The Newly Required PFAS Testing!

comprehensive testing services for environmental contamination, covering groundwater, surface water, drinking water, soil, and hazardous waste, all of which use EPA-approved methods.

In recent years, the focus on water quality has intensified, with an increasing emphasis on the presence of harmful substances like PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). Effective March 18, 2024, the United States Government has mandated comprehensive water quality testing, including PFAS. This amendment aims to safeguard public health by ensuring water safety in various facilities.

What is PFAS?

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in various industrial applications and consumer products for their resistance to heat, water, and oil. Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS do not break down in the environment and can accumulate over time. Their persistence raises concerns due to potential health risks, including cancer, liver damage, and immune system effects. Given these risks, monitoring and managing PFAS levels in water supplies is crucial.

Why Is PFAS Testing Now Required?

The short answer is that it causes cancer. Once it is in your body there is no way to remove it, hence the name “the forever chemical”. The long answer is that the government’s mandate to include PFAS in water quality testing is part of a growing awareness of their environmental and health impacts. These chemicals are not just a problem in drinking water, as chemicals can leach out of failing septic systems, landfills, farm fields and more, eventually discharging into the ocean and disrupting its ecosystems.

These chemicals can affect fish, dolphins, other marine life, and the entire food chain, which ultimately includes fish that humans eat. The spread of these chemicals has ecological and human health implications.

By enforcing this requirement, the aim is to proactively identify and mitigate any potential contamination, ensuring that water supplies remain safe for consumption and use. This move reflects a broader commitment to public health and environmental protection.

Where is the lab located?

Florida WPS is partnered with Florida International University (FIU)’ research laboratories to provide comprehensive PFAS testing results across the great state of Florida.

The lab is located on the Key Biscayne Campus.

What compounds are mandated to be tested and what levels do the samples need to be under to be compliant?

As of August 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set specific limits for these PFAS compounds, particularly for drinking water. The regulatory limits are part of broader efforts to manage PFAS contamination. Here’s a summary of the limits for these five PFAS compounds:

  • Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS): 0.02 µg/L (parts per trillion, ppt)
  • Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): 0.02 µg/L (ppt)
  • Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA): 0.02 µg/L (ppt)
  • Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA): 0.02 µg/L (ppt)
  • Perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS): 2 µg/L (parts per billion, ppb)

These limits are set to protect public health and ensure that drinking water remains safe from these persistent and potentially harmful chemicals. It’s essential to stay updated on regulations, as these limits may change based on new research and policy developments.

How much does PFAS Testing Cost?

Provide pricing, average $250/sample, larger sample contracts can be negotiated for discounts if samples are mailed to the lab Sample pickups can be priced upon special request.

What is the turn-around time for sample results?

The average turn around time for sample results is 3 weeks.
