Bacterial Contamination

What is Hyperchlorination?

Domestic water hyperchlorination is a process of increasing the chlorine concentration in the water supply system to a level that is higher than the standard disinfection levels. This is typically done as a temporary measure to address specific water quality issues such as bacterial contamination, biofilm buildup, or other types of microbial growth.

Hyperchlorination involves adding a concentrated solution of chlorine to the water supply system in a controlled manner. The water is then allowed to circulate throughout the system for a specific period of time, typically several hours, to ensure that all areas of the system are adequately disinfected.

 How It Works

  • We work closely and swiftly within our network to create solutions through hyperchlorination:
  • We consult with mechanical engineers to write hyperchlorination specifications for new construction projects or facilities already experiencing biological problems in their domestic water system.
  • We partner with many mechanical contractors to provide hyperchlorinations of new domestic water piping systems in various settings.
  • In addition to having the ability to mitigate an existing Legionella issue, Florida WPS also provides hyperchlorinations to facilities on a regular basis as a preventative measure.

Example Scope of Work

The objective of this project is to effectively mitigate the growth of Legionella ssp in the building’s potable water system through a comprehensive chlorination process. The process will be carried out using the following method. Firstly, the system will be flushed to remove all contaminants and sediment. Then, disinfectant treatment and flushing will be performed in accordance with either the Shock disinfection method recommended by the WA Department of Health or a disinfectant treatment process approved by the West Palm Beach Water Authority.

The disinfection process will follow the guidelines of Section 610 of the 2018 International Plumbing Code and include an initial high-velocity flush of all cold and hot potable water lines. During the flushing process, all flow-restricting devices will be removed to avoid any obstructions. Once the flushing is completed, the potable water system will be filled with the appropriate disinfectant and allowed to stay for the recommended residence time.

A monitoring plan will be implemented to ensure that the treatment chemicals are adequately dispersed throughout the entire building water system for the required contact time. The chlorine residuals will be measured, and post-disinfection flushing will continue until the residuals are equal to or less than the potable water entering the building. All point-of-use outlets and fixtures will also be cleaned and disinfected.

The Florida WPS will repeat the flushing/disinfection process if confirmatory testing determines that clearance standards have not been met. The disinfectant used for this project will be Olin HyPure, Sodium Hypochlorite, 20% NSF/EPA Registered. The Florida WPS will also be responsible for the proper management and disposal of all treatment chemicals and any discharge to the POTW will be done in accordance with the applicable municipal code. The Owner will carry out confirmatory testing for Legionella after the Florida WPS determines that the potable water system has been adequately disinfected. The records of all work done will be provided to the Owner as part of the project closeout records.

Client Testimonials

Miguel came into our building and diagnosed our problem with ease and great communication. Miguel and his team helped us understand the process. They helped us to avoid our HVAC system shutting down due to microbiological and corrosion issues.

TYLER

I recently had the pleasure of using WPS services for their waterborne pathogen testing, and I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with their professionalism, expertise, and dedication to quality. From the moment I contacted them, their customer service was excellent, and they took the time to fully understand my testing needs.

JOE

Zach was right on time and was friendly, helpful and professional. He answered my questions thoroughly and put me at ease. I've never had a whole house water filter system so he took his time to explain to me how it works and what it does.
